The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (Deluxe Edition) [Blu-ray] Review

Update: This product are currently on sale through this link on Amazon.

Although some critics trashed this version of “The Mummy”, and some ardent fans disliked it enormously, “The Mummy: Tomb of the Draggon Emperor” is a fun film with a good script and wonderful state-of-the-art special effects. And who can resisit Brendan Fraser who reprises his role from the other two “Mummy” films. The movie was a huge financial hit accumulating over 0,000,000 at the worldwide boxoffice. Because of this there are other “Mummy” sequels in post production. In this version the story centers on how a 2000 year old curse is broken and how a ruthless dragon emperor wrecks havoc on the earth with his intention of enslaving its inhabitants. It is up to the O’Connell family to save the day. Rick’s son Alex is now an adult, played by sexy Luke Ford, who helps his dad in the battle against the forces of evil. Roger Ebert stated that this is “the best in the series”. The DVD comes with exteded and deleted scenes, commentary, and more.

The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (Deluxe Edition) [Blu-ray] Specifications

The third film in the The Mummy series freshens the franchise up by setting the action in China. There, the discovery of an ancient emperor’s elaborate tomb proves a feather in the cap of Alex O’Connell (Luke Ford), a young archaeologist and son of Rick O’Connell (Brendan Fraser) and his wife Evelyn (Maria Bello, taking over the role from Rachel Weisz). Unfortunately, a curse that turned the emperor (Jet Li) and his army into terra cotta warriors buried for centuries is lifted, and the old guy prepares for world domination by seeking immortality at Shangri La. The O’Connells barely stay a step ahead of him (climbing through the Himalaya mountains with apparent ease), but the action inevitably leads to a showdown between two armies of mummies in a Chinese desert. The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor has a lot to offer: a supporting cast that includes the elegant Michelle Yeoh, Russell Wong, and Liam Cunningham, the unexpected appearance of several Yeti, and a climactic battle sequence that is nightmarishly weird but compelling. On the downside, the charm so desperately sought in romantic relationships, as well as comic turns by John Hannah (as Evelyn’s rascal brother), is not only absent but often annoying. Rarely have witty asides in the thick of battle been more unwelcome in a movie. Rob Cohen’s direction is largely crisp if sometimes curious (a fight between Fraser and Jet Li keeps varying in speed for some reason), but his vision of Shangri La, in the Hollywood tradition, is certainly attractive. –Tom Keoghbr>

Like some others have already said, i too was wanting this to be another “Anime Masterpiece” um not entirely while the concept is admirable along with the characters plight it just seemed to be missing something, what? I do not know, visually it is second to none. It seems to be akin to it’s much earlier predecessor Nuasica (messed up the name) and the valley of the wind’ however this one is far more Nature-Gaia centric in that it involves Elementals, monkish druids made out of trees etc.. so, it nice to see (for the first time) definitely not a bad anime, but could have branched out story-wise instead of the simplistic tale of duality .. “Black and White” “Us vs them” approach. this was OK, but was rushed, and became all too predictable not leaving any room for pondering what would happen next. However the animation is above average so giving this 4 stars is stretching it little. Very good but not the Myazaki film I thought it would be. I am not really sure if he was even involved in this, so I may be wrong for giving it that critique, either way it’s worth looking at.

Origin: Spirits of the Past (Special Edition) [Blu-ray] Specifications

Outstanding animation and a compelling environmental message make Origin: Spirits of the Past an above-average anime feature, especially for younger viewers. Despite an abundance of elements that many anime fans will find familiar, Origin distinguishes itself with a story that lends itself (like many anime features) to a variety of spectacular settings. As the fairy-tale story begins, it’s been 300 years since terrible events left civilization in ruins. Now, in a post-apocalyptic setting where the crumbling remains of vast cities lie in close proximity to the encroaching forest, humans live on both sides of a brewing conflict. For young Agito, the son of an aging hero, life is relatively peaceful in Neutral City, a community built within the ruins of a once-major city. But when he wanders into a forbidden zone of the forest, where plant-like “druids” protect their world from outsiders, he discovers a cryogenic stasis tube containing Toola, a girl who’s been resting in stasis for 300 years. Her father had been in charge of the “Earth Rejuvenation Project” that led to a technological disaster, and her emerging friendship with Agito is threatened when they find themselves on opposing sides of an ideological conflict, and Agito must save Toola from her potentially destructive convictions. He does so by becoming “enhanced”–essentially melding his human form with the forest, aligning himself with the powerful forces of nature. As a colorful mixture of science fiction and “green-friendly” adventure, Origin has a lot to say about preserving our planet in the era of global warming, and it’s a visual treat from start to finish. –Jeff Shannon

Coming to America (Special Collector’s Edition) [Blu-ray] Overviews

Paramount Coming To America (Blu-ray) (Special Collector’s Edition)
“Coming To America” casts comedian Eddie Murphy as pampered African prince Akeem, who rebels against an arranged marriage and heads to America to find a new bride. Murphy’s regal father (James Earl Jones) agrees to allow the prince 40 days to roam the U.S., sending the prince’s faithful retainer Semmi (Arsenio Hall) along to make sure nothing untoward happens. To avoid fortune hunters,Prince Akeem conceals his true identity and gets a “Joe job” at a fast-food restaurant. Murphy and Hall play multiple roles, and there are innumerable celebrity cameos peppered throughout the proceedings – including the Duke Brothers (Don Ameche andRalph Bellamy) from “Trading Places.” “Coming To America” made further headlines when humorist Art Buchwald sued the film’s producers for plagiarizing one of his works. Buchwald carried the case to trial, where he won a sizeable judgement against the film’s producers.

Coming to America (Special Collector’s Edition) [Blu-ray] Specifications

Half of the characters in this 1988 John Landis potboiler seem to be played either by Eddie Murphy or costar Arsenio Hall, swaddled in elaborate Rick Baker makeup appliances that render them unrecognizable but also weirdly immobile. As a pampered African prince who journeys incognito to Queens, New York, to find a bride who will love him just for himself, Murphy manages to look smug and naive at the same time. There are enjoyable sequences of Murphy’s Prince Akeem applying his lordly manner to his new job in a fast-food emporium, and falling for the boss’s spirited daughter (Shari Headley), who teaches him how to party down, American style. But the fish-out-water premise is never fully exploited. Star spotters will have a field day locating Cuba Gooding Jr., Donna Summer, Louie Anderson, Vondie Curtis Hall, E.R.’s Eriq La Salle, and Samuel L. Jackson in their minuscule supporting roles. –David Chute

The Original Faces of Death: 30th Anniversary Edition [Blu-ray] Review

3.0 from 5

This movie is just as awful as the original but now it looks even more fake and dorky due to Bluray. I don’t recommend this movie to anyone that hasn’t seen it or that has no idea what its all about. However, to those that grew up with the stir that this “underground” video caused around the world knows exactly why it is impossible to resist adding this movie to your “classics” collection. A cult film at its best!!!!! As I pointed out Bluray does not improve in any way what is essentially a VCR camera production, it lays bare all the horrible filming and editing of this totally crappy production. This movie SUCKS but, THAT IS THE WHOLE IDEA :)

First Knight (Special Edition) [Blu-ray] Overviews

Together, Sean Connery, Richard Gere, Julia Ormond (Legends of the Fall, Sabrina) and Jerry Zucker, the director of Ghost, bring you a new vision of King Arthur’s Camelot. A vision of breathtaking battles, of heart-pounding courage, of the undeniable love that brought an entire kingdom to its knees… and of the undying passion that made it live forever.

First Knight (Special Edition) [Blu-ray] Review

3.5 from 5

After the brutal first few minutes of the film, I thought it was going to be a more realistic telling of the Arthurian legend; it turned out to be quite the opposite, but I still enjoyed it.

The Good: The (unrequited) love between Lancelot and Guinevere is more understandable given that Arthur is depicted as being a contemporary of Guinevere’s father, and easily old enough to be her father, if not her grandfather, whereas Lancelot is young and very heroic and dashing. Even so, there is genuine affection between Arthur and Guinevere, and she never breaks her marriage vows, either during the betrothal or during the marriage. I also like the way Lancelot is depicted. He is more human; he is not the font of virtue he is depicted as in other versions of the legend. His association first with Guinevere and then with Arthur has an enobling effect on him, making him a better man at the end of the film than at the beginning. Also, the evil knight Malagant is played wonderfully by Ben Cross.

The Bad: Where in the world did they get those hideous royal blue uniforms? They look like something out of a Star Trek movie (or TV series). It is unusual that costuming makes or breaks a film, but these awful costumes almost single-handedly destroyed the film and any credibility it might have had. I was trying to watch the film and I kept being distracted by how terrible those blue uniforms were. The other thing was, Camelot seriously needs a new head of security. First, they nearly let Guinvere be captured on her trip to Camelot to be married, then they let her be effortlessly kidnapped from Camelot, whisked away as if by magic, then they let Malagant’s army waltz right into the city without a fight. Hello? King Arthur wouldn’t have lived long enough to have gray hair if he was this sloppy about security.

Still, I felt the good outweighed the bad in this interesting retelling of the Camelot legend.

First Knight (Special Edition) [Blu-ray] Specifications

1995 had already seen the box-office success of sword-wielding heroes in Rob Roy and Braveheart when along came this glossy revision of the Arthurian legend, in which Lady Guinevere (Julia Ormond) is torn between her love for the noble King Arthur (Sean Connery) and the passionate knight Sir Lancelot (Richard Gere). As the story opens, Guinevere’s lands are under attack by the evil knight Malagant (Ben Cross), and she must choose between marriage to Arthur and the security of Camelot, or encouraging the affections of Lancelot, who has heroically rescued her from a potentially lethal attack. Anyone looking for meticulous medieval authenticity won’t find it here, but director Jerry Zucker (Ghost) keeps the action moving with exuberant spirit and glorious production values. Even if you don’t completely believe Richard Gere as a somewhat too-contemporary Lancelot, the performances of Ormond and especially Connery are effortlessly appealing. –Jeff Shannon
